Volunteer to Count River Herring

If the warm weather has you dreaming of spring, you are not alone! We are eagerly anticipating April when we can witness one of the most spectacular river herring migrations in the world right here on the Mystic River.

Volunteers have been the core of Herring Monitoring Program since the volunteer-run bucket brigade hoisted herring over the Mystic Lake Dam, and we still cannot do this work without you! Because of volunteers monitors we know that the population of fish in the Mystic River has more than doubled since 2012, strong evidence that expanding spawning habitat by installing the fish ladder has had an incredibly positive effect.

Continue to help us gather this data and share this ecological success story— register to be a Herring Monitor today! New monitors will need to attend a training on Saturday, March 24th from 10:00am-12:00pm at the Medford Boat Club. Past volunteers are encouraged, but not required, to attend.
