An alum of Boston University and a former MyRWA board member, Karen has been part of our watershed for over 50 years. Living in North Cambridge for 7 years then moving to Arlington, where she stayed active playing tennis into her 50s. While in Arlington, she developed a love for Spy Pond and Spy Pond Park because of the views and access to canoeing.
Karen’s enhanced relationship with the Mystic started with a tour hosted by Richard Beinecke, author of The Mystic River: A Natural and Human History and Recreation Guide. Maria Simoneau, a member of Friends of Spy Pond Park and former board member of MyRWA, had introduced Karen to the Association. Beginning in 2009, Karen was on the board for ten years, involved with the Herring Run and Paddle prize donations, tabling at multiple events, inviting other BU alumni to help, and even creating the successful “Reverse Tashlich” stewardship events.
“Maintaining the environment is important to our mental and physical health,” said Karen. “The environment, especially the Upper and Lower Mystic communities need to have awareness about stormwater, heat indexes, and policies that directly impact their communities. Advocacy and the connectedness of our actions will help guide the developments for our communities when it comes to the impact of the environment.”
Karen is also the President of the Friends of Spy Pond Park–which has been successful in completing multiple on-the-ground improvement projects with the Town of Arlington. If you have ever been there for Fun Day in September, you have probably met Karen who is a guiding force for this annual event.
MyRWA is happy to have supporters and donors like Karen–who will be on the next 50 year journey with us!
