2022 marked our first year back at full force for outdoor volunteer activities after several slow years adapting to COVID-19 pandemic. To increase the health and resilience of watershed ecosystems, we work with volunteers to remove invasive species and pick up trash from parks and paths along the river.
We are energized by and extremely grateful for community members’ enthusiasm to restore and protect the Mystic. Thank you for making this work possible!
Join us in celebrating some of the highlights from the 2022 stewardship season:
By the Numbers
Larger and more frequent events, volunteer leaders, corporate investment, and new staff all contributed to the success of our stewardship efforts in 2022.
Season Highlights
The first water chestnut event of the season at the Mystic Lakes was greatly aided by this shopping cart find. Working with Point 32 Health and community volunteers, we completely filled a compost dumpster to the top — 410 baskets of water chestnut in total for the day!
Our first ever Teen Volunteer Week brought high school students from around the watershed together along the Mystic. These events were co-led by youth from GreenRoots ECO, Medford Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility, and our 2021 volunteers of the year, Iris and Jasmine Zhao.
You never know what you’ll see when you’re out in the watershed! Here are some of our most memorable animal encounters from the season:
