The Mystic River Watershed Association is excited to be part of the Malden Works team that was awarded the first-ever Norman B. Leventhal City Prize, a new interdisciplinary prize out of MIT aimed at catalyzing innovative urban design and planning approaches worldwide to improve both the environment and quality of life.

Through Malden Works, the project team will bring together a new coalition of community leaders of color, youth, environmental advocates, and government stakeholders to reclaim the publicly owned parcel along Malden’s riverfront which houses Malden’s Department of Public Works. This is part of the Mystic River Watershed Association’s larger Malden River Greenway vision for an accessible pathway along the length of the river, designed for public recreation and enjoyment. The project also seeks to serve as a model for the equitable and resilient transformation of similar urbanized waterways in metro Boston and beyond.

A public kick-off event to begin the community conversation about the future of Malden’s waterfront is planned for Monday, October 21 @ 6:30 pm. Alexie Torres-Fleming, a nationally sought-after speaker, will begin the evening program. She will share her story of creating a community-driven movement to revitalize parks along the Bronx River. The meeting is free and open to the public.
