Summer of Extremes: Racism, Health Inequity, and Heat

COVID-19 Collides With Climate Crisis: Boston/Brookline/Cambridge

Three-part event: August 20, August 27, September 3 6-7:30 PM, EST | Registration Required.

This summer marks the 25th anniversary of one of the deadliest heat waves in U.S. history. It is also predicted to be one of the hottest on record. With COVID-19 and the massive response to the unceasing public health crises of police brutality and structural racism, summer 2020 might also prove to be one of the most revolutionary. The past is present and the present is urgent. Is Boston prepared to take on the heat of this moment? Join for a three-event series:

  • Thursday, August 20 - Part 1: It’s All The Same Map | This session will explore similarities between the death maps for the 1995 heat wave and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, centered in communities impacted by racism and poverty. What are the similarities of these cities, Chicago, Boston and Cambridge?

  • Thursday, August 27th - Part 2: Mental Health & Reporting on Trauma | This session will feature medical healthcare providers, trauma and mental health experts discussing the crisis in the communities, knowing the difference, especially when it’s children and adults.

  • Thursday, Sept 3rd - Part 3: The Now and The Future | Reimagining Health Equity & Human Heat Emergency Plans This session will examine strategies from local government officials and global thought leaders to prepare residents for future safe summer as heat, COVID-19 and the need for physical distancing collide. City of Boston declaring Racism as Public Health Crisis - What does that mean?
