Project Misik, In a Somerville Yard: A Series of Free Music Performances & Workshops

  • Mystic River Watershed Association 32 Shore Drive Somerville, MA (map)

 The Somerville Arts Council presents:

Outdoor performances at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse Park

 About the Series

The universal magic of music and brings us together--and a perfect way to spend a late summer evening!

PROJECT MISIK: IN A SOMERVILLE YARD, a production by Project Misik brings this concept to Somerville neighborhoods, featured artists include: Solomon Murungu showcasing the mbira; Harrison Tei, teaching Ghanaian drum & dance; Peniel Guerrier, a Haitian drummer and dancer; and Becky Bass playing a steel pan! Join us for an amazing summer music series filled with music and dance from Ghana, Zimbabwe, Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago. Each evening is divided into two parts --a one hour workshop of learning the history of the instruments and music, followed by hands-on instruction. The sessions conclude with the artists performing live music--students and audience members are invited to join the fun. Let’s learn, create and dance!

During COVID, the Somerville Arts Council issued a grant program support our BIPOC community. Zili Misik was one of the grant recipients. Designed to serve individual BIPOC artists, this initiative creates a bridge that builds organizational capacity to provide leadership in arts by presenting programs and instruction that predominantly serve the BIPOC culture and bring culturally equity to our community.
