Join Latino Outdoors in removing an invasive plant from the Mystic River as part of Latino Conservation Week! Volunteers will head out in canoes to hand-pull water chestnuts from the river.
We will provide life jackets, gloves, canoes and paddles, and lunch thanks to our partnership with Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA). Be sure to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty and closed toe shoes that will get wet!
About the water chestnut:
Water chestnut is native to Asia, Europe and Africa. In the Boston area though, the plant is harmful to aquatic biodiversity.
It made its way to Boston in 1897, when a Harvard botanist introduced it as an ornamental plant in Fresh Pond in Cambridge. Water chestnuts spread over a river’s surface, crowding out native plants and altering the water chemistry. When the plants die during the fall season, their decomposition draws down the dissolved oxygen which fish and other aquatic animals need to survive. Additionally, the plants get caught in motor boats and limit the use of the river.
If we don’t remove water chestnuts, they will literally take over the freshwater portion of the Mystic River! It’s important that we pull these plants before they have a chance to reproduce so that we diminish the seed bed.

Who:
Ages 6+ are welcome! Youth aged 6-11 may participate under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Youth aged 12-17 may participate without a parent or guardian present at the event but waivers must be signed by a parent or guardian beforehand.
We are capping this event at 30 canoe volunteers and 4 land volunteers.
What to bring:
Please wear clothing that can get wet and dirty. Bring sunscreen, water bottle, and bug repellent. Life jackets and gloves will be provided.

You have symptoms of COVID-19 or acute illness; including fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or new loss of taste or smell
You have tested positive for COVID-19 or been presumed to have COVID-19 and continue to experience symptoms of COVID-19 including fever
You are currently under quarantine for any reason
SAFETY NOTE: Water chestnut pulling events will not be conducted in weather conditions that place participants in a situation that is dangerous. This includes thunder/lightning storms, heavy rain, diminished water quality, and during a heat advisory. Decision to postpone or cancel in case of severe weather or water quality concerns will be communicated with volunteers as soon as possible.

¡Únase a Latino Outdoors para eliminar una planta invasora del río Mystic como parte de la Semana de la Conservación Latina! Los voluntarios saldrán en canoas para sacar a mano castañas de agua del río.

Ha dado positivo por COVID-19 o se presume que tiene COVID-19 y continúa experimentando síntomas de COVID-19, incluida fiebre
Actualmente se encuentra en cuarentena por cualquier motivo.
