Ready…Set…Let’s Remove Water Chestnut!
We need you! The invasive water chestnut got a break from being pulled with the scale down of removal events last year and has returned in force this summer. This aquatic plant is bad news both for the river ecosystem and for recreation.
We need a big push to get water chestnut under control in the Mystic River.
On Thursday, August 12th, we will be having a Water Chestnut Relay to try to remove as much water chestnut as we can in one day. Volunteers can sign up for a 2 hour shift to go out in canoes to pull this invasive plant, then they can pass their paddles on to the next group of volunteers to continue the effort.
See details and register below:
When: Thursday, August 12th (Shifts: 7am-9am, 9am-11am, 11am-1pm)*
Where: Mystic River across from the Whole Foods in Medford (2151 Mystic Valley Pkwy, Medford, MA 02155)
*2pm-4pm and 4pm-6pm shifts, which were previously listed, have been cancelled due to predictions for high temperatures and humidity during these times
**Note: you must be 6 years or older to participate. Youth aged 6-11 may participate under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian. Youth aged 12-17 may participate without a parent or guardian present at the event but waivers must be signed by a parent or guardian beforehand.
