The Town of Arlington is building a bioretention facility at the intersection of Egerton and Herbert Road. This green infrastructure retrofit will divert and treat stormwater[i] runoff in vegetated areas within two curb extensions on either side of the street. These structures will beautify the streetscape, decrease crossing distance for pedestrians, calm traffic, and reduce the discharge of pollutants into Alewife Brook. Additionally, it is expected that this site will be an excellent model for local replication within town and in neighboring municipalities.

[i] Stormwater runoff is rainfall that flows over the ground surface. It is created when rain falls on roads, driveways, parking lots, rooftops, and other paved surfaces that do not allow water to soak into the ground. Stormwater runoff is the number one cause of stream impairment in urban areas.
