OBJECTIVE

The Mystic River Watershed Association is working to promote green infrastructure in three environmental justice communities bordering the Malden River through public and municipal education, technical assistance, and through an existing conditions analysis of Malden River water quality. This project is funded by the US EPA Urban Waters Small Grants Program.

WORK PRODUCTS

  1. Public Education: Development and distribution of media on stormwater and Green Infrastructure

    3. Stormwater Utility Bill Insert (coming soon)
    4. Public Involvement: Public charrette for locating green infrastructure; Stormdrain stenciling
    5. Analysis: GIS analysis of feasibility for infiltration-based Green Infrastructure; Statistics, modelling and GIS analysis of phosphorus sources, trend analysis on MWRA, MyRWA nutrient data and quantities to identify areas for Green Infrastructure; Analysis of municipal code/zoning ordinance/bylaw for Green Infrastructure potential 
    6. Municipal Education: Develop technical Green Infrastructure document, Convene multi-municipality Green Infrastructure Conference, Tour local Green Infrastructure projects

By the end of the project, municipal staff from Medford, Malden and Everett will be equipped with the knowledge of best locations within their communities to site Green Infrastructure.

PROJECT DETAILS

The Malden River is a 2.5-mile long waterway abutting the cities of Malden, Medford, and Everett within the Mystic River Watershed. This urban waterway has a history of intense industrial use and access to the river remains limited. The high degree of imperviousness and development surrounding the Malden River has resulted in a significant stormwater runoff problem and listing for multiple water quality impairments. The project addresses the water quality issues by working to reduce the largest ongoing source of pollution, nonpoint source pollution, through the application of Green Infrastructure.This rain garden treats runoff from a parking lot in Arlington, MA.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE refers to systems that use natural processes to treat, infiltrate, evaporate, and/or reuse stormwater. Green Infrastructure uses soils, topography, and vegetation in a way that minimizes the impacts of polluted stormwater and maintains water quality of urban environments and water bodies. Examples of Green Infrastructure include rain gardens, bio-retention, tree-filter systems and porous pavement.

WHO IS INVOLVED IN THIS PROJECT?

Each of the three cities will be assisting the project to meet the goals of improving the public understanding of stormwater, communicate to residents and developers on the benefits of green infrastructure, and assist in a critical review of code, by-law and ordinances for changes that will allow green infrastructure and improve water quality.
