From Snow Days to Hot Days: Climate Change Volunteer Science in the Mystic

  • Mystic River Watershed Association P. O. Box 390 Arlington, MA 02476-0004 (map)

How is climate change impacting communities in the Boston Area? To help better understand where extreme heat and urban heat islands are, MyRWA and the Museum of Science, Boston is conducting a heat mapping campaign called Wicked Hot Mystic this summer to collect real-time ambient temperature data (the air we breathe and feel) and air quality, in the Mystic River watershed. Join Sara Benson (MOS) and Melanie Gárate (MyRWA) on IG live to learn why heat is a public health issue, know about our Wicked Hot Mystic project and volunteer to be part of this volunteer science project.

During the Wicked Hot Mystic project, data collected by volunteers via cars or bikes will be used to develop a detailed temperature map to identify heat islands and places people can go to cool off in the Mystic watershed. By understanding where the outdoor hot spots are in the Boston area, cities can more accurately plan and adequately invest in the potential health impacts of extreme heat on people.
