WATERSHED CLEAN-UPS

River clean-ups are a fun and rewarding experience! MyRWA typically hosts or partners with other organizations to participate in spring-time river clean-ups. If you would like to host a river clean-up please contact us and we’ll be sure to help spread the word!

 

MYSTIC COMMUNITY EARTH DAY 2014

Mystic Community Earth Day is organized by many community groups and organizations in the Mystic River Watershed to coordinate efforts around Earth Day (April 22nd). This is the fifth consecutive year of Mystic Community Earth Day  and we hope you'll lend a hand at one of the events below! 

Saturday, April 26th

Cambridge: Alewife Earth Day Cleanup and DCR Park Serve Day
Friends of Alewife Reservation and Green Cambridge will host a park cleanup along Alewife Brook and Little River in coordination with DCR Park Serve Day on Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. The day is also in honor of International Seed Day. All supplies will be provided. Volunteers should meet outside the Alewife MBTA station at the passenger pickup area.

Chelsea: Chelsea Collaborative will host a city-wide cleanup with a celebration afterwards on Saturday, April 26. Volunteers should meet at 8:30 a.m. at Chelsea City Hall, 500 Broadway for the cleanup; tree-planting activities from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and a celebration from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. will follow at Bosson Park on Grove St. Food will be available and supplies will be provided, all we need is body power! In case of heavy rain the city cleanup will be held on Saturday, May 3.

Malden: Tri-City Community Action Program, Inc. (Tri-CAP), Friends of the Malden River, the City of Malden and Cambridge Health Alliance are partnering to organize a cleanup around the Malden River. Meet at Cambridge Health Alliance, 195 Canal Street in Malden. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 26. All supplies will be provided. This event is rain or shine.

Medford: Friends of the Mystic River will host its 19 annual Mystic River Spring Clean-Up on Saturday, April 26 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. meeting at the Hormel Stadium lot, 90 Locust Street.  Clean-up supplies will be provided. The clean-up will include the Mystic Riverbend Park and MacDonald Park, but participants may travel to any other location they wish along the Mystic in Medford. Morning and lunchtime refreshments provided.

Somerville: Mystic River Watershed Association, the City of Somerville, Groundwork Somerville, Gentle Giant Rowing Club and KEEN Footwear are hosting a river clean-up on Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. until noon, with a BBQ afterwards at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse, 32 Shore Drive, Somerville. This event is also part of Comcast Cares Day. Groups will disperse from the boathouse in various directions. All supplies will be provided. Parking will be permitted on Shore Drive for this event. Somerville: The City of Somerville and Groundwork Somerville are hosting cleanups at various locations on Saturday, April 26 from 9:00 a.m. to noon, followed by a BBQ at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse, 32 Shore Drive. This event is also part of Comcast Cares Day. Supplies will be provided. Winchester: The Winchester Conservation Commission is sponsoring its annual effort to improve the appearance and water quality in the Aberjona River. To join the fun, go to the Conservation table in the Town Hall parking lot (between Town Hall and the Library) between 9:00 a.m. and noon on Saturday, April 26. You will be directed to a location that needs cleaning up. Plastic bags and gloves will be provided. Please come with clothing that covers your legs and arms. Rain or Shine.

Winthrop: Friends of Belle Isle Marsh will host a Spring Belle Isle Marsh Clean-Up on Saturday, April 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We will be meeting at the John Kilmartin Walkway across from Short Beach at the Winthrop-Revere (Beachmont) town line in the parking lot. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and bring gloves. It is a damp/wet area. St John's Church will supply pizza at the end of the morning.

MyRWA clean-up

Thinking about organizing a river clean-up?
Here are some things to consider: You’ll need gloves, trash bags, a dumpster or way to dispose of the garbage collected, and lots of volunteers.

Volunteers wanted in West Medford for ongoing monthly clean up of Lower Mystic Lake area. Join a dedicated group of neighbors who take turns cleaning up. Contact Barbara Van Zoeren bvanzoeren@comcast.net to get involved!

Friends of the Mystic River, a Medford-based community organization focused on the enjoyment, protection and enhancement of the Mystic River in Medford, often organizes river cleanups.  Visit their website at www.fomr.org for more information.
